Locally Preferred Alternative for the Wake Bus Rapid Transit (BRT): Western Corridor Extenstion - Cary to RTP

In 2023, a Wake BRT Extensions Major Investment Study (MIS) evaluated extending the Western BRT corridor from downtown Cary to RTP, and recommended a corridor that followed NC 54, Evans Road, and McCrimmon Parkway from the future Downtown Cary Multi-Modal Center to Hub RTP located near the Davis Drive and NC 54 intersection in RTP.  The MIS recommended a follow-up Concept of Operations Study to further evaluate the corridor, recommend a Locally Preferred Alternative for the corridor, and propose operating and capital plans to implement service on the corridor.  This Western Corridor Extension was included in the 2030 Wake Transit Plan and in the 2035 Wake Transit Plan. 

The Western Corridor Extension will extend the reach of the Western Corridor, allowing travel from Downtown Raleigh to RTP through Downtown Cary.  The project will include transit signal priority (TSP) at all signalized intersections, transit queue jumps at some intersections, and dedicated BRT stations. The BRT stations are anticipated to include branding, fare payment options, level vehicle boarding, real‐time bus arrival information, ADA accessibility and safe pedestrian infrastructure between stations and surrounding infrastructure.  The Western Corridor Extension will operate at half of the frequency of the Western Corridor BRT, with 20-30 minute headways, and will run seven days a week.  The Western Corridor Extension will operate on the GoRaleigh 60-foot articulated BRT buses, providing a one-seat ride from Downtown Raleigh to RTP on alternating trips.

Wake Transit partners reached concurrence on the proposed LPA through the Wake Transit Concurrence Process.  A map of the proposed LPA is below.
