GoTriangle has occupied the current Regional Transit Center (RTC) at 4600 Emperor Boulevard in Durham since 2008, with the intention of relocating to a site more easily accessible from major highways and adjacent to planned investments in bus rapid transit and rail service. In 2019, GoTriangle initiated a feasibility study to evaluate opportunities for relocating the RTC to provide enhanced functionality, connectivity, and reliability.

The proposed new facility, now known as the Triangle Mobility Hub, will integrate regional bus service, paratransit, microtransit, and first- and last-mile options in one convenient location, and it will support connections to future transportation options like bus rapid transit (BRT), a regional bikeway, and passenger rail. The current RTC site is limited in its capacity to provide these multimodal connections and to accommodate the service growth envisioned in the County Transit Plans.

Through the feasibility study, GoTriangle assessed existing conditions at the RTC, identified program requirements for the future Triangle Mobility Hub, and conducted a comprehensive site evaluation process to determine the best location for the new facility.

Consideration of a locally preferred alternative (LPA) for a regionally significant multi-modal center involves three characteristics of a proposed project: location/site, modes accommodated, and adequate capacity to support the future program requirements of the modes to be accommodated. In concert with these considerations, three (3) key requirements were identified for potential sites. The sites had to be proximate to I-40 and to planned investments in bus rapid transit and rail service; accommodate the proposed transit modes and not preclude connections to future transit investments; and be large enough to accommodate the transit facility program and future transit-oriented development.

Given these parameters, GoTriangle identified a site in Research Triangle Park at the intersection of NC 54 and the railroad corridor as the preferred site for the Triangle Mobility Hub, which is being proposed as the LPA for the facility. Through the site evaluation and feasibility study process, it was determined that the site can accommodate:

  • 12 active and 2 layover bus bays to support current and future bus service
  • Loading zone for paratransit, microtransit, ride share, and private vehicles
  • Enhanced passenger amenities, including covered & conditioned waiting area and seating, public restrooms and water fountains, phone charging and Wi-Fi
  • Operator amenities, including breakroom and restrooms
  • Customer service area, including ticketing window
  • Park-and-Ride parking spaces
  • Roadway network improvements, including signalized intersection with transit priority
  • Pedestrian and bicycle pathways and bicycle storage

The proposed site is a 19.3-acre assemblage of two parcels currently owned by the Research Triangle Foundation, which has approved this site for the future Triangle Mobility Hub. Multiple conceptual layouts have been evaluated to validate that the site can accommodate the required functions of the Triangle Mobility Hub facility.

On April 15, 2026, the GoTriangle Board of Trustees approved the proposed site as the LPA for the Triangle Mobility Hub. GoTriangle will seek Concurrence on the LPA through the Wake Transit Concurrence Process in May 2026, and the LPA will be considered by the CAMPO TCC and Executive Board in May 2026 (information only), with action anticipated for June 2026, which will include a public hearing at the Executive Board meeting on June 17, 2026. The Triangle West TPO, TC and Board will also consider the LPA in June 2026.

GoTriangle will conduct additional public engagement in Fall 2026 to share project updates, including the proposed facility layout.
